In-form Waterhouse central defender Roshawn Amos has credited head coach Javier Ainstein for his resurgence this season as he sets his sights on breaking into the national programme.
Since the arrival of the Argentina-born Ainstein who replaced Marcell Gayle at the Drewsland-based Waterhouse FC in January of this year, Amos has become a mainstay in the team, starting every match and playing a key role in the club’s improved fortunes.
“Our coach has pushed to motivate a lot of his players. I am one of them,” said Amos. “When he just came to the club, he sat me down and he spoke to me and told met that he sees me as a key player in the team. He said I needed to transform my game and become one of the top defenders in the league so that we can go on and win the league. He is a great coach because very single day he motivates his players at training and during our games.”
The 23-year-old Amos, who has also represented Arnett Gardens in the past, added that his recent performances are proof of his growth. Now he is performing consistently as he has been given opportunities to show what he can do.
“I think that I have answered his (coach’s) call quite well because every day that I step out on to the field my game has been improving and I know that I have been playing quite well for the team,” he said.
“I always wanted to show everyone that I am a top defender and now everything is coming together for me. The feedback from the spectators has been great because almost every match that we play, people are telling me that I am the man of the match and I love that feeling.”
Waterhouse’s turnaround
Waterhouse’s turnaround has been significant. Once struggling, the team has climbed to fifth in the standings on 56 points, level with Racing United and Portmore United, who occupy third and fourth spots, respectively.
Amos, a former standout at Calabar High School, noted that he is confident the team can push even further and go on to the win the title.
“I think that we can definitely win the title because of the form that we are in and the coach that we have,” he said.
Amos also shared that his personal ambitions include playing overseas and representing Jamaica at the international level.
“My main goal is get a contract overseas and also be a part of the national programme,” he said. “I have been working very hard on and off the pitch to achieve these goals.
I am putting in the work. Outside of formal training I will go and run the hills and so I am lot fitter right now and I am also feeling very energetic,” Amos underscored.
