Letter of the Day | Caribbean unity key to regional sovereignty

THE EDITOR, Madam:
The Caribbean once again stands at a critical crossroads as debates intensify about CARICOM’s role and the responsibility of member states to uphold regional solidarity. In an increasingly volatile global environment marked by geopolitical rivalry, shifting alliances, and economic uncertainty, small island developing states cannot afford fragmentation. Even when we are not central to major global conflicts, the consequences – economic shocks, supply chain disruptions, security pressures, and migration challenges–inevitably reach our shores. For this reason, coordinated regional action and strategic diplomacy are essential for our survival.
CARICOM must therefore guide the region toward a unified approach that protects Caribbean interests while ensuring constructive engagement with the wider international community. Collective action is vital to achieving several key objectives.
First, sustaining economic growth.
Caribbean economies remain deeply vulnerable to external shocks and fluctuations in global markets. A coordinated regional strategy allows us to strengthen trade partnerships, improve resilience, and attract investment across sectors such as tourism, renewable energy, technology, and agriculture. Unity enhances the region’s negotiating power on the international stage.
Second, maintaining principled diplomacy.
Caribbean states are known for championing peaceful dialogue, respect for international law, and multilateral cooperation. Balanced diplomacy helps protect our sovereignty while preventing entanglement in conflicts that do not serve our long-term interests.
Third, promoting meaningful regional support.
Whether the challenge is political, humanitarian, or economic, Caribbean states must be prepared to support one another through collective decision-making and coordinated responses. Solidarity strengthens our capacity to address emerging crises effectively.
Given global uncertainty, regional leaders must approach decision-making with prudence, restraint, and objectivity. Foreign policy choices must reflect long-term implications, prioritize human life, defend democratic values, and promote sustainable development. The choices made today will shape the future stability and prosperity of Caribbean citizens.
CARICOM must therefore act with clarity, unity, and strategic foresight. Regional decisions should be transparent, collectively determined, and supported by all member states so that the Caribbean can speak with one coherent and influential voice. Any development threatening peace or democracy must be addressed decisively through coordinated action. The Caribbean’s strength has always rested in its spirit of cooperation. Now more than ever, that unity must guide our collective path forward.
