Letter of the Day | Celebrate unsung heroes in cancer fight

THE EDITOR, Madam:
As we observe Cancer Awareness Month, it is important to honour not only those bravely battling cancer but also the families, friends, and support groups who stand beside them each day. Cancer is often described as battle which consumes the body, mind and spirit of the person diagnosed and fighting the disease, but it also challenges the families and friends who share the battle.
When a loved one is diagnosed with cancer, life changes instantly. Suddenly a whole new world opens. Families and friends find themselves navigating unfamiliar hospital corridors, visiting wards and departments not previously recognised, facing a whirlwind of complex tests and prescriptions with daunting names that are often tongue twisters. Additionally, the cancer diagnosis twists and contorts finances as well as the physical and emotional wellbeing of the fighter as well as friends and families.
The fight against cancer is not an individual fight. Cancer affects the individual as well as the family and friends whose hearts it breaks along the way but it also reveals profound strength and unity. Because, through this battle, the resilience and support of loved ones become a crucial source of strength. During Cancer Awareness Month, let us recognise and celebrate these unsung heroes whose unwavering support, comfort, encouragement and compassion make a difference every day.
