The Clarks Town community in Porus, Manchester, hosted a vibrant back-to-school treat on August 27, themed “We Rise By Lifting Others.” As children prepared for the new school year, they enjoyed a day filled with free rides, games, snacks, and entertainment, including an inflatable bounce house and tarpaulin. The event also provided educational supplies such as books, stationery, school bags, and even assistance with school fees, making it a joyful and supportive experience for all the kids involved.

Anthony Gentles, affectionately known as Whiz, who spearheaded the initiative, now in its fourth staging, shared: “I felt very honoured to be able bring the community together in such a beautiful way. Giving back to one’s community, especially the place where you were raised is a wonderful gesture that can bridge some of the social, economic and spiritual gaps.” “I walked these streets barefoot to go to school. I attended school without lunch and books, and so I vowed to be there to show these kids that it is possible to blossom from a humble beginning to become someone greater than yesterday. Greater than anyone could imagine you could ever be. I love to take the time to be this kind of person that can motivate and inspire others with this charitable gesture!”

The day’s activities also saw parents, guardians turned out to be entertained and fed. There was music, fun and frolic, as the elders and children alike waited to be served with soup, hot meals like curried chicken, fried chicken, roast pork with rice and peas, and a variety of beverages.

Community members expressed gratitude to Gentles, who expressed his appreciation for the residents’ support of the event.

“I am pleased with the turnout and particularly happy that I was able to meet the needs of the many parents and children who came with an expectation. “
